THE SUBMARINE MUSEUM, HAMBURG
Memories of times long past

Immerse yourself in the world of the Cold War: the U-Boot Museum Hamburg
A steel giant at Hamburg’s fish market takes visitors into the mysterious world of submarines. The submarine museum in Hamburg is home to the Russian submarine U-434, one of the largest non-nuclear fighter and spy submarines in the world. Explore the interior of this fascinating vessel and immerse yourself in the history of the Cold War. Narrow corridors, technical equipment and authentic rooms provide an impressive insight into life on board.
From spy submarine to museum ship
The U-434 was built in the Soviet Union in 1976 and served as a spy submarine for the Russian Navy. Equipped with the latest technology, it patrolled off the US coast and monitored NATO shipping. After the end of the Cold War, the submarine was decommissioned and brought to Hamburg in 2002. Here it was extensively restored and converted into a museum ship.
Technical insights
Inside the submarine, visitors can explore the various sections and learn about the complex technology of the submarine. Visit the torpedo room with its massive weapon systems, the engine room with its huge diesel engines and the command post from which the submarine was controlled. However, the latter can only be viewed as part of a guided tour. Numerous information boards and exhibits explain how the individual components work and provide insights into the technical progress of submarine development.

Life on board
The U-434 had room for a crew of up to 80 men. Visitors can view the cramped and functionally furnished living quarters and thus get an authentic impression of life on board. It is hard to imagine how the men lived together in such a confined space and carried out their duties underwater.

History at first hand
Many of the exhibits can be viewed up close, for example on a flying visit to the crew quarters. You can also learn a lot about the history of submarines here. Thanks to the tides that prevail outside the submarine, the experience of diving up and down is also very realistic.
A visit to the submarine museum in Hamburg is an unforgettable experience for the whole family. Experience the fascinating world of submarines and immerse yourself in the history of the Cold War.
