PLANETARIUM HAMBURG

Reach for the stars

Planetarium Stadtpark Die Roten Doppeldecker

Stars within reach: Hamburg Planetarium

In the heart of Hamburg’s Stadtpark, nestled in a green oasis, stands an imposing building: the Hamburg Planetarium, also known as the Star Theatre. For over 90 years, it has been opening its doors and taking visitors of all ages on a journey through the infinite vastness of the universe. Behind the historic façade is a centre of cutting-edge technology that inspires with breathtaking shows, exciting lectures and changing exhibitions. Whether you are new to astronomy or an experienced stargazer, there is something for everyone to discover here.

From water tower to star temple

The history of the planetarium is closely linked with that of the city park. The striking tower that houses it was originally built as a water tower in 1912. However, just a few years later it was taken out of service and left empty. It was not until 1930 that the tower found its new purpose: thanks to the commitment of astronomy enthusiast Hans Hagge, it was converted into a planetarium and has been home to one of the oldest star projectors in the world ever since.

Architecture and location

The listed brick building impresses with its stunning architecture. With its striking dome and imposing entrance, it is reminiscent of an ancient temple. Its location in the city park is ideal: surrounded by green spaces and water, the planetarium offers a calm and relaxed atmosphere that invites you to linger. From the viewing platform at a height of 40 metres, you can also enjoy a breathtaking panoramic view of the Hanseatic city.

Constantly changing: the programme

The Hamburg Planetarium is known for its diverse programme. In addition to classic star shows, which show the night sky in all its glory, there are always new highlights to discover. 360-degree films take visitors on a journey through the universe, live lectures by renowned scientists shed light on current research topics, and interactive exhibitions invite visitors to participate and experiment. These include a virtual tour of the planetarium, which starts on the newly designed ground floor directly in front of the reception area, which visitors enter through the two new main entrances at the city park level. From there, they get a complete view of the now two-storey foyer, which opens up to the ceiling painting designed by Dorothea Maetzel-Johannsen and executed by Heinrich Groth in 1930, depicting constellations.
