MARKK – Museum am Rothenbaum – Cultures and Arts of the World takes you on a fascinating journey through the cultures of the world. From Africa to Asia, Oceania and the Americas – here you will encounter impressive works of art, everyday objects and religious objects from different eras and regions. Discover the diversity of human cultures and learn more about the history and present of our world. Even before you enter the building, you should take a look at the façade. Various sculptures by the sculptor Johann Michael Bossard can be seen here.

From ethnology to MARKK

The history of the museum goes back to the 19th century. The Museum für Völkerkunde was founded in 1879 to present the growing collection of ethnographic objects of the city of Hamburg. Over time, the museum developed and increasingly opened up to contemporary arts and cultures. In 2018, the museum was renamed MARKK to reflect its changed aspirations and new direction.

World Cultures and Arts

Today, MARKK is home to one of the largest ethnographic collections in Europe. Objects from all continents are displayed on three floors. The permanent exhibitions invite visitors to discover the diversity of human cultures and to engage with different ways of life. The focus is on mutual appreciation and dialogue between cultures.

The document archive: the museum at Rothenbaum has numerous estates from ethnologists, geographers, linguists and explorers. Among them are personalities such as Franz Termer, Karl Sapper, Johan Adrian Jacobsen, Hans Heinrich Brüning and many others. The estates include correspondence, diaries, travel notes, manuscripts, maps and drawings.

The Photographic Collection: With a stock of almost 450,000 images, the museum at Rothenbaum has a unique photographic collection. The oldest known photograph was taken in 1858, only seven years after the first glass plate negative was created.
