HARBOUR HAMBURG
Welcome to Europe's second largest port

Hamburg's maritime heart: the harbour
Between container giants and historic ships, between fish rolls and the Elbphilharmonie concert hall – the Port of Hamburg is much more than just a transshipment centre for goods. It is a place full of life, history and maritime charm.
Gateway to the world
For centuries, the Port of Hamburg has been a gateway to the world. It all began with the Hanseatic League. This association of merchants ensured that Hamburg merchants were able to bring their goods from distant lands into the city. Today, huge container ships from Asia dock here, elegant cruise ships depart for distant lands, and historic sailing ships evoke memories of the great age of seafaring. The best place to watch the colourful hustle and bustle is from the Landungsbrücken. Here, at the pulsating heart of the harbour, you can watch the ships arrive and depart, listen to the seagulls screeching and enjoy the fresh sea air.
Maritime museums and imposing ships
If you want to learn more about the history of the port and seafaring, you will find a variety of museums around the Port of Hamburg. The International Maritime Museum presents ship models, navigation devices and maritime artworks. On the museum ship Cap San Diego, visitors can experience a piece of seafaring history up close and immerse themselves in the world of old sailing ships. The Rickmer Rickmers can also be visited.
The Peking, which can be seen in the former free port, is a relative newcomer to the ranks of maritime museums. This is a prime destination for port enthusiasts: it is here that the last remaining quay ensemble from the imperial era can be found. Historic freight cars on the rails, massive cranes pointing their arms towards the sky and historic watercraft bring this part of the port to life.

Viewpoints with panoramic views
The plaza of the Elbphilharmonie concert hall offers a breathtaking view of the harbour. From up here, you can watch the hustle and bustle from a completely new perspective. The ‘Michel’, Hamburg’s landmark, also offers a fantastic panoramic view of the harbour and the city.

Culinary delights and harbour romance
But the Port of Hamburg is not just a feast for the eyes. You can enjoy freshly caught fish in the numerous restaurants and cafés on the waterfront or feel the sun on your face as you enjoy a coffee. In the evening, the bars and pubs in the Portuguese quarter entice you in with live music and a maritime atmosphere.
